P.E. State Guidelines

We ensure that all P.E. programs adhere to the physical fitness requirements established by the California Education Code.

Physical Education is defined as physical activities that are conducive to health and vigor of body and mind. They are recreational in nature.

+ All students in grades 1 through 8, except pupils excused or exempted, shall be required to participate in courses of physical education for a total period of time of not less than 200 minutes each 10 school days (or an average of 20 minutes per day).

+ All students in grades 9 through 12, except pupils excused or exempted, shall be required to participate in courses of physical education for a total period of time of not less than 400 minutes each 10 school days (or an average of 40 minutes per day).

There are a number of ways for students to achieve physical fitness as set forth by the California Education Code.

1. Participate in an organized physical fitness program provided by a local recreation center, the YMCA, or a sports program.
2. Walk, bicycle, or play at a local playground at such a level that it will increase the student's heart rate.

3. Join an athletic team such as a football, basketball, baseball, or swim team.

4. Take classes provided by a registered gymnastics, dance, or martial arts club.

5. Participate daily in viewing and following directions as set forth in an aerobic exercise video appropriate for the student's age and ability.

Note: These MP4 videos will not play on some mobile devices (see below).
